In order to foster interest in mathematics, CCMS distributes math problems to high school students. These problems are challenging, but their solutions do not require advanced mathematical knowledge. Students can work on these problems by themselves or in groups. CCMS provides grading. There is a deadline for solution submission, which is usually one month after problem distribution. Solutions may be submitted by email (preferred) or by regular mail, under an I.D. Grades are published on our website.
The service we provide is publishing problem sets and grading students’ solutions. Grading is provided by mathematics students from the six colleges named in the first paragraph.
The Math Challenge will be commencing soon with problems being posted at the beginning of October, November, December, February, March, and April. As before, submissions are possible any time during the month of publication, and will be graded soon after.
This year we are also adding a second set of easier problems posted at the same time. These will not be graded but all are welcome give them a try!
There will be $100 given to the student who has the best record of correct answers for the 6 hard problem sets collectively and $50 will be given to the runner upin the hard category.
For students who have answered 25% of the problems over the year we will be issuing a a letter of commendation. This letter will note that the problems were hard and that 25% represents 9 of the problems answered correctly which is a very commendable achievement!
