Abstract

I will consider the FitzHughNagumoMcKean model of a nerve fiber, and discuss the effect on signal transmission of an injury to the fiber, which we model by introducing a gap in which both reaction and recovery are absent. For a subset of parameter values there are three standing waves, one of which is stable while the remaining two are unstable. The stable standing wave can block signal transmission and set up a stationary pattern in the fiber.
