The main scientific contributions of De Giorgi will be briefly described, including, but not limited to, his brilliant solution of the 19th Hilbert problem. Today, this contribution is known as the De Giorgi-Nash Theorem. We will give a glimpse of his complex personality and his wealth of interests outside mathematics
